What differentiates the raids from patches you've made

I've mentioned the Chromie scenario in the WOTLK Gold past. One thing I like about this Chromie scenario is that when we were constructing it we were making a decision how often you can actually run the scenario. We also after listening to a lot of feedback about how some of the contents in 7.2 seemed like it was a little bit gated, that definitely played into the choices of the way Chromie ended up being played out, which there's not really any time-gating.

What differentiates the raids from patches you've made from the point of view of your process of development? When compared to previous years, raids aren't tightly timed to patches as they were prior to. They take place a few days after. How has this affected the growth of the patches themselves?

It's been fun. We've been thinking about the game's design and the way we make available parts of the game in a different way. The past was when it was more discreet patches--a patch is simply "this amount of" content which is released on the date you want and everything it is in. As we build content prior to the release date, if you have The Tomb of Sargeras in the game before it's completed, it's an appropriate time to be in the Tomb of Sargeras. After that, we can release the raid or any type of content that is time-gated at a moment that feels right. We wouldn't want to make it available too early.

If we'd released it earlier, in 7.2 I'd say that it could be a feeling that we didn't have enough time to fully explore Nighthold. I know there's lots of guilds that are still striving to complete some of the bosses that were last seen, and if we'd waited longer, it'd most likely feel as if we'd been stuck in Nighthold for too long. Sometimes a raid tier can get boring and lose interest, so decoupling those two things has made it easier. This gives us a more space to take feedback into consideration, feel out the way the community's reacting to what's happening and then release content as it feels right.
