Angel City FC and former USWNT player Sydney Leroux has been the FIFA 23 Coins most vocal on social media, talking about how realistic her appearance looked in FIFA 16. when she was added along with all of the U.S. Women's National Team.
Leroux also quoted several players' tweets on how they look in-game as he laughed at the absurdly awful models for their characters. "Found my long lost twin! It's a fraternal connection," tweeted Portland Thorns player Janine Beckie. His teammate Madison Hammond wrote "Somebody please contact me when they locate me, Madison Hammond #99 from Angel City! Because this...is clearly not!"
Leroux wrote "mam that's Didier Drogba" in response, referencing his male Ivorian retired professional. Hammond is, most notably being of Black in addition to Native American descent.Leroux also shared a screenshot of the bald actor model San Diego Wave keeper Kailen Sheridan. She wrote "I realize that women are expected to be happy and grateful that you've given us a bit of publicity but please stop in the middle of us. There are some of us who are bald."
Sheridan was quick to respond to the tweet with a photograph of a different character model of her and said, "Bruhhh how I go from having a shaved head to a full shaved had in Canada and a full hairdo in San Diego, this Bosley hair growing [sic] no joke."Both Sheridan and Hammond have altered their Twitter profile pictures to those of their game models in a way that is clearly mocking the situation.
FIFA 23 utilizes the facial scan technology of EA to produce more realistic models of professional athletes, and it did do this for the Arsenal as well as Manchester City women's teams back in July of last year. However, EA does not seem to be able needed to use these superreal scans on every single player, which is likely the reason why they regularly include new scans in updates.
