  I'm of the opinion that you should never WoTLK Gold whenever you'd like to. You shouldn't ever min max if you don't want to. The only exception is that if you're min maxing but they are sorry if somebody isn't min maxing, don't expect others to want to play with you even if they're not min max and I think that's the main difference. As a matter of fact, the only friction that happens is when people who aren't maxing or are min maxing want to join a group or be involved with people of the opposite side.
