Yankees reportedly nearing minor-league deal with Chris Iannett

  • A few weeks ago DJ LeMahieu Jersey, the Yankees brought back catcher Erik Kratz on a minor-league deal. The idea here was to give Kyle Higashokia some healthy competition in spring training for the backup catcher role. It looks another catcher will enter the equation, though, as Sweeny Murti reports the Bombers are nearing a deal with Chris Iannnetta. Iannetta, 36, played 52 games with the Rockies in 2019 https://www.yankeesapparelshop.com/Yankees_Luke_Voit_Jersey-86. He hit .222/.311/.417 with six home runs, amounting to a 70 wRC+. He graded out as a slightly below average catcher in terms of framing, and he has a relatively weak pop time. The occasional power display represents his calling card. Besides Colorado, the 14-year veteran has had stints with the Angels, Mariners, and Diamondbacks. Overall, he a career .230/.345/.406 hitter an exactly average 100 wRC+. Iannetta had a few strong seasons at the plate, notably in 2014 with the Angels and 2017 with Diamondbacks. As far as depth catchers go, you could probably do worse. Something tells me the Yankees want Higashioka to win the job outright, though.
